Cooking Together 7/19/2023: New oven enables more diverse cooking experience and strengthens togetherness

The “Cooking Together” project in Leichlingen has reached a significant milestone – on July 19, 2023, the long-awaited new oven was successfully put into operation. This success was made possible by the generous support of dedicated donors, including a significant donation from Globolus. The team of “Leichlingen Hilft” would like to thank all supporters who helped to make the dream of a second oven come true. This important purchase will enrich the shared cooking experience for many people and strengthen togetherness.

“Cooking Together” is a regular event that takes place every Wednesday at 6 p.m., even during the summer vacations. The project aims to create a platform where people from different backgrounds can come together, cook together and explore culinary cultures from around the world. The new powerful oven now opens up even more possibilities for preparing varied menus without having to compromise on the dishes.

The participants of the first cooking event with the new oven were thrilled and conjured up a delicious 3-course meal:

  • Appetizer: Mediterranean grilled vegetable salad
  • Main course: Baked chicken with potatoes and vegetables
  • Dessert: Fruity berry porridge with vanilla cream

Not to mention the delicious olive and feta cheese bread that went perfectly with the dishes.

The time saved thanks to the new oven enabled the participants to enjoy the meal longer in a relaxed atmosphere and to exchange ideas even more intensively.

Since the launch of the “Cooking Together” project, the diverse cooking group has already prepared dishes from a variety of countries. From the Orient to the Occident, the culinary journey took participants through the flavors and aromas of the world. Each country brought its own culinary traditions and specialties, which were explored and prepared together.

The encounter between new Leichlingers and the refugee participants was particularly gratifying. Curious, the Leichlingen residents inquired about the refugees’ countries of origin, from which a cordial dialogue about culture, home and life experiences developed. The refugees even showed the people of Leichlingen videos of their hometown as well as pictures that illustrated the effects of war and destruction. This moving encounter illustrated once again how cooking and eating together not only pleases the palate, but also builds bridges of understanding and empathy between people of different backgrounds.

“Cooking together” has become a platform where encounters, cultural exchange and solidarity are lived. Everyone is welcome to participate in this enriching project, regardless of background or financial situation.

The initiative “Leichlingen Hilft” is already planning further actions and projects to strengthen the community and support people in difficult situations.
