Cooking together on 24.05.2023: A culinary journey to Portugal
On May 24, 2023, the “Cooking Together” event took place in Leichlingen and whisked participants away on a culinary journey to Portugal. This time, typical Portuguese dishes were on the program, which were prepared and enjoyed by the participants together.
It was a colorful mix of people with and without a migration background who came together that evening to discover Portuguese cuisine together. The atmosphere was lively and cheerful, while the participants enthusiastically helped to prepare the food.
One of the main attractions of the evening was the preparation of Portuguese bread. The participants kneaded the dough, shaped the bread and enjoyed the delicious smell that came out of the oven while baking. It was a wonderful moment of cohesion when the fresh bread finally arrived on the table and was enjoyed by all together.
Another highlight of the evening was “Frango de Churrasco”, a grilled chicken prepared with a spicy marinade of garlic, lemon and spices. The participants were enthusiastic about preparing the chicken and cooking it on the grill. The tantalizing aroma of barbecue filled the air and raised the anticipation of sharing a meal.
Served with the chicken was “Arroz de Tomate,” an aromatic tomato rice that perfectly complemented the grilled flavors of the chicken. This delicious rice was prepared with tomatoes, onions, garlic and spices and made for a tasty side dish.
For a sweet temptation, there were “Pastéis de Nata,” traditional Portuguese egg pies that were tender and creamy. Participants had the opportunity to prepare the dough and make the filling before taking the delicious Pastéis de Nata out of the oven. It was a moment of pride and joy when everyone tasted their homemade pies.
To round out the menu, they also served “Caldo Verde,” a hearty cabbage soup made with potatoes, onions, garlic and thinly sliced kale. This soup brought a comforting warmth and was appreciated by the participants as a delicious complement to the other dishes.
The “Cooking Together” project not only creates a platform for cultural exchange and integration, but also an atmosphere of togetherness and shared experience. People from different backgrounds and nationalities come together to cook, eat and learn from each other.
The “Cooking Together” event on May 24, 2023 was again a success and showed how food can connect people. Participants not only had the opportunity to learn about Portuguese cuisine, but also to make new friends and build community.
The project organizers are thrilled with the response and are already planning the next “Cooking Together” event. They are looking forward to welcoming many interested people again and to experience more culinary adventures together. It’s a wonderful opportunity to expand horizons, discover new flavors, and celebrate the diversity of the world through food and community.
